Progressive Peels

As a Master Esthetician, Tara is a Certified Peel Professional with several professional skincare lines (PCA, Circadia, Linder) and believes in chemical peels that are “progressive”, rather than “aggressive”. Beautiful change can happen in the skin with little to no downtime. With perfected formulations for all skin types, even those with sensitive skin, modern peels improve challenging skin concerns by increasing the cell turnover rate while penetrating corrective ingredients into the skin, bringing healthy new skin cells to the surface, encouraging the production of collagen, smoothing skin texture, reducing signs of fine lines and wrinkles, clearing minor breakouts and clogged pores, improving hyperpigmentation or dark spots caused by aging, sun damage or old acne breakouts.

New clients must schedule a New Client Consultation & Intro Peel appointment and be prescribed and using a Circadia home care regimen for at least four weeks prior to receiving any Advanced Peels. This allows us to prepare your skin and tailor treatments that are safe yet deliver beautiful results. Best results are achieved when performed in a series.

Chemical Peel Frequently Asked Questions

What is a chemical peel and what do they help with?

A chemical peel, or corrective peel, is a professional skin treatment that uses carefully selected formulas to exfoliate the skin, support healthy cell turnover, and improve the appearance of concerns like dullness, uneven tone and texture, discoloration such as melasma, post-acne marks, acne breakouts, light acne scarring, clogged pores and congestion, fine lines, sun damage and compromised barrier while supporting overall skin health.

Not always. The word “peel” can be misleading because not every chemical peel causes visible peeling, and flaking skin is not a sign that the peel is “working”. With many modern peel formulations, peeling or flaking skin is more of a side effect rather than a goal.

Some peels create a healthy glow with little to no flaking, while deeper peels may cause visible dryness, tightness, shedding, or flaking for several days. Your level of peeling depends on the type of peel used, your skin condition (if you don’t exfoliate regularly and have a thick layer of dead skin cells to shed), and how your skin responds.

You do not have to visibly peel to get results from a chemical peel. Many lighter peels work by gently exfoliating and stimulating cell turnover without dramatic shedding. The beneficial ingredients that help change at a cellular level are driven down into the layers of skin that are the “building blocks” of pigment, collagen and elastin. Your skin can still look brighter, smoother, and more refreshed even if you do not experience visible flaking.

Did you get a peel and didn’t have flaking or peeling? THAT IS JUST FINE!

Yes, but timing matters. A gentle glow peel may be appropriate closer to an event, while deeper peels should be scheduled well in advance because flaking, dryness, or peeling may occur several days later.

For first-time peel clients where we don’t yet know how your skin will react to a peel, and how much it will flake, it is best not to schedule a peel immediately before an important event. Your skin would be better suited to a fruit enzyme exfoliation in one of our Signature Facials to give you a glow!

Your peel will be chosen based on your skin type, current skin condition, sensitivity level, lifestyle, and goals. Not every peel is right for every person, so your skin will be assessed before treatment to determine the best option for your needs.

Peel options may include gentle, hydrating peels for glow and texture, clarifying peels for congestion and breakouts, and more advanced corrective peels for pigmentation, acne scarring, sun damage, and deeper visible concerns.

Yes, certain chemical peels can be appropriate for deeper skin tones when selected and performed correctly. We carry peel formulations that are developed specifically for pigmentation issues associated with skin of color and is indicated for Fitzpatrick skin types I–V. A professional consultation is important to analyze your skin concerns and develop a treatment plan combining professional home care containing pigment inhibitors with a suitable peel.

The peel is only one part of the process. What you use on your skin every day between treatments plays a huge role in how well your skin responds, heals, and improves over time. Peels work best when the skin barrier is healthy, hydrated, and protected. Daily SPF is especially important because fresh, newly exfoliated skin is more vulnerable to sun damage and pigmentation.

Think of it like hiring a personal trainer at the gym. You could have an amazing trainer, follow a customized workout plan, and push your body in the right direction, but if you leave the gym and eat fast food every day, your progress is going to be slower, harder to maintain, and less noticeable. The workout still helps, but your daily habits are either supporting your results or working against them.

Your skin works the same way.

Chemical peels are the “workout” for your skin. Professional home care is the “nutrition” your skin needs between treatments. The right products help keep the skin barrier healthy, hydrated, protected, and prepared for each peel, which allows us to treat the skin more effectively and safely over time.

This is especially important when treating pigmentation, melasma, sun damage, or post-acne marks. Pigment can be stubborn because the skin is constantly receiving triggers from sun exposure, heat, inflammation, hormones, and irritation. That’s why pigment-inhibiting products are often recommended before, during, and after a peel series.

Ingredients known as pigment inhibitors help slow the process that leads to excess discoloration. Many of these ingredients work by targeting tyrosinase, an enzyme involved in melanin production. In simple terms, tyrosinase helps your skin create pigment (skin color). When we use products that help inhibit tyrosinase, we are helping reduce the chance of new unwanted pigment forming while the peel works to lift and brighten existing discoloration.

Without the right professional home care, especially daily SPF and pigment support, the skin can continue making new pigment even while we are trying to correct it. That can make results slower, less even, or harder to maintain.

For the best long-term outcome, chemical peels should be part of a complete plan: professional treatments, consistent SPF, barrier-supporting products, pigment inhibitors when needed, and a routine chosen specifically for your skin. When your in-studio treatments and daily home care work together, your skin has the best chance to become brighter, smoother, healthier, and more even over time.

A single peel can be great for a seasonal refresh or glow before an event, but more severe concerns like pigmentation, melasma, texture, and sun damage usually respond best to a series. Your treatment plan will be customized based on your skin, the peel selected, and how your skin responds.

Some lighter peels may be repeated more frequently, as soon as every 4 weeks. More advanced corrective peels require more time between treatments, typically every 2-3 months when appropriate.

Chemical peels may not be recommended if you are pregnant or nursing, have a sunburn, active infection such as HSV (herpes, cold sores, fever blisters around the mouth or face), open acne lesions, a compromised barrier, recent excessive sun exposure, certain allergies, or are using certain medications. A consultation will help us determine whether a peel is appropriate or whether your skin needs barrier support first.

Before a chemical peel, you will be asked to pause retinoids, exfoliating acids, scrubs, acne medications, or other active products for 7 to 14 days. You should also avoid tanning, excessive sun exposure, waxing, and other irritating treatments before your appointment.

After a peel, avoid sun exposure, heat, sweating, saunas, hot tubs, exfoliating products, retinoids, and harsh active ingredients until your skin has fully recovered. SPF is essential. Picking, pulling, or scrubbing peeling skin can cause irritation, prolonged healing, pigmentation, or even scarring. Let the skin shed naturally and use only the products recommended in your post-care instructions.

Your post-care routine will be explained at your appointment so your skin can heal properly and you can get the best possible result.

Professional peels require an Esthetician to have advanced education (especially when treating skin of color), skill in product selection, skin analysis, timing, application, neutralization when needed, and post-care guidance. Peel experts are trained to deliver visible results while protecting the skin barrier, and treatment plans are tailored to the client’s unique skin and goals.
